What to Wear to a Wedding

Updated: Nov 17, 2019

Wedding season is in full effect, with four weddings on the calendar this fall. No better way to prep for my own wedding next spring than to get inspiration, and surround ourselves in the joy of newlywed celebrations.

Two out of four of the weddings I'll be going two are cocktail attire, one is beach casual, and the last wedding of 2019 is black-tie formal. Wedding dress codes vary from casual attire to black-tie formal, and there are some key points to consider when picking an outfit as a wedding guest:

  • Do your best to stick to the recommended dress code suggested by the newlyweds.

  • Be mindful of dressing appropriate for the weather and season.

  • Wear comfortable shoes, or be prepared with a back-up pair to change into.

  • Tread lightly on wearing solid whites; you don't want to take away from the bride or groom in white.

  • It's better to be overdressed than underdressed.

I've created a little style guide to assist you in deciding what to wear for your next wedding event:

Casual Wedding

Think casual outing at a nicer dinner or evening out; you still want to dress to impress. No jeans or flip flops!

For Men: Relaxed pants (chinos or linen pants), sport coat or blazer, tan or light brown loafers or boat shoes, light-colored solid or patterned button-up shirts, patterned dress shirt with sleeves rolled up, leather belt, fun dress socks

For Women: Sun dress (knee-length or maxi-dress), linen, chiffon, or jersey fabric jumpsuit (solid or patterned), high-waisted palazzo pants with a nice blouse, wedges, block-heeled mules, flats, dressier sandals

Semi-Formal or "Cocktail" Attire Wedding

Semi-formal or cocktail attire is probably the most common wedding dress code. It's the happy medium between a casual and formal wedding, and gives your guests a wide spectrum of outfit choices.

For Men: Navy or grey suits, dress shirt with a tie and slacks, leather dress shoes, leather belt

For Women: Cocktail dress in darker jewel tones or black, heels, pant suits

Black-Tie or Formal (Optional) Wedding

This is the event to go all out and dress to the nines.

For Men: tux or dark suit (with or without vest), white dress shirt, dark leather dress shoes, tie or bow tie

For Women: more formal cocktail dress with heels, floor-length evening gown

This past weekend, I had the honor of witnessing the wedding of my two college friends in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They’re dress code was semi-formal of cocktail attire. I loved wearing this green satin slip dress from Bebe for only $50, paired with Bauble Bar gold earrings, and strapping Steve Madden nude heels.

XO,
